CCTV Leeds – What is CCTV?

CCTV stands for “Closed Circuit Television”. This is a system that’s ideal for monitoring and recording the movement of people in a defined area. There are two types of CCTV system, although both of these can be integrated into a single system, and there is a variety of accessories and treatments that allow a system to be tailored to the customer.

Monitoring systems

Many businesses, local authorities and government bodies use CCTV for monitoring purposes. Installing cameras in key locations allows security operatives to see what is going on in any given area in real time. Monitoring systems work by using cameras that link to one or more monitors in a control room. Someone watches the monitor screens for anything suspicious and can usually alert another member of the security team if they feel something needs to be investigated. The key benefits of this type of system are:

  • Interference – Anyone behaving suspiciously can be stopped and questioned as soon as the behaviour is noticed, which may prevent a crime from being committed.

  • Deterence – clear notices stating that the shop or business operates a monitoring system may deter would-be criminals from targeting it.

  • Confidence – the knowledge that a business is monitoring the behaviour of the people inside the business or shop gives added confidence to workers and visitors.

Recording systems

These work on the same basis as monitoring systems, but instead of sending the pictures to a real-time monitor, they go to a video or DVD recorder. Tapes and disks are timed and labelled so that they can be referred to if there is a crime and identification or other footage is needed. Recording system benefits include:

  • Evidence – Recorded images of people involved in criminal or potentially criminal behaviour can be caught by strategically placed cameras. The recorded evidence may help to identify those involved and may form part of the evidence against them should they be prosecuted.

  • Deterence – as with the monitoring system, any business that operates CCTV and records the images is potentially deterring criminals from stealing. Whilst it cannot be guaranteed to work 100% of the time, it can make a positive difference to the number of crimes you suffer.
